Legendary television presenter Don Lane has died in Sydney at the age of 75. American-born Lane became a household name in Australia through The Don Lane Show . Lane was originally hired to fill in at Channel Nine for six weeks. He went on to become one of the country's most popular stars and at one time was the highest paid person on Australian television.I thought I should post this album in memorium as I have some great memories of watching Don throught the 9 years that his show ran.
Although not thought of as a great singer this album has some merit the songs on the album suit his vocals, another album I hadn't listened to until I ripped it and I liked it . Don recorded a number of albums and singles the best known being "You're Everything" released in 1969.

Sharon O'Neill - Physical Favours

Physical Favours/Silk Or Stone

O'Neill began her career in the 1970s in her home country New Zealand, then gained major success in Australia with the hit "Words" and the subsequent singles "How Do You Talk to Boys?" "Maybe" "Losing You" and "Power".
The early 1980s proved her most commercially successful period, composing and performing the soundtrack to the 1981 film "Smash Palace", and with the Foreign Affairs album in 1983 spawning her biggest hit "Maxine" , a song which chronicled the life of a Kings Cross prostitute. A legal battle with her then record company Sony caused a delay in her career.
In 1987 Sharon returned with arguably her best album (if under-rated at the time) Danced in the Fire "Physical Favours" was lifted from that album the B-Side "Satin And Stone" is a non album track.

Mr. Lee Grant - Mr. Lee Grant

Havah Nagilah/You Can Have Her/ The Real Thing/Some Kina Magic/Coloured Lights/Opportunity/Yo Yo/Take My Hand/Love/The Coalman/Spicks And Specks/Thanks To You

Mr. Lee Grant Kiwi superstar of the late sixties didn't make much of an impression here in OZ but was huge over there The Mr. may seem a bit pretentious but that was added to avoid confusion with a local actress with the same name. The album which I had never heard before was quite good .
A special thanks to Rex for sending me this album.
The opening track "Hava Nagilah" I thought was a strange choice until I read that he was born Bogdan Charis Kominowski to Polish parents on April 22 1945, in a Nazi concentration camp just outside Dusseldorf. His father was killed, but he and his mother survived and emigrated to New Zealand in 1949, settling in Palmerston North chilling stuff. The song "The Real Thing" not the Russell Morris hit is probably my Fave followed by the 2 Bee Gees covers Ronnie Burn's hit "Coalman" and the Bee Gee's first big hit "Spicks And Specks".

The band were signed to the Regular label and their first release was the single, "Big Girls" written by Buckfield, in April, 1984. Lana Cantrell - Lana!

The Sound Of Silence/How Can I Be Sure/Baby Now That I've Found You/Honey/The Fool On The Hill/Can't Take My Eyes Of You/ For Me/Workin' On A Groovy Thing/Mine/The Music Played

By the time she was ten years old, Australian born musical prodigy, Lana Cantrell was already the "Boogie Baby" of her country, singing and playing the piano in jazz concerts at the Sydney Town Hall. She made her television debut on the first show ever to be shown in Australian and during the next four years was a regular on the two biggest variety shows in the country, Bandstand and In Melbourne Tonight.
Her American debut was even more auspicious. Coming to the States at age 19, Lana made 15 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show as well as numerous appearances on all of the top variety shows, including Kraft Music Hall and The Red Skelton Show. In 1966 she was selected to represent the U.S.A at the International Song Festival, held in Poland. Lana returned to America with the first prize, which was awarded to her for her unique rendition of "I'm All Smiles".
A top recording artist, Lana Cantrell has recorded seven albums for RCA Victor, numerous singles in Australia on the Festival Label, and her hit single, "Like A Sunday Morning" on the Polydor label. Lana has worked with many summer stock companies, including a summer co-starring with Alfred Drake. She played the role of Dorothy in the summer theatre production of The Wizard Of Oz.
1972 was a homecoming for Lana when she returned to Australia to open the Sydney Opera House. In 1975 she was honoured once again when she was named "International Woman of the Year" and was flown to Paris by the United Nations to sing at the Olympia. In 1978 she co-hosted the Greater New England Emmy Awards Show with Phil Donahue and in 1979 was a judge for the Miss Universe Pageant held in Perth, Australia.

Lana! was released in 1968 and is a slice of sixties pop with songs from Simon and Garfunkle "Sounds Of Silence" The Rascals "How Can I Be Sure" Beatles "Fool On The Hill" Bobby Goldsboro "Honey" 5th Dimenson "Working On A Groovy Thing" and my favourite on the album Matt Monro's "The Music Played" the whole album is a delight to listen to, her style has been likened to Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand but that's the Yanks for you always trying to pidgeon hole you.

Billy Thorpe - That I Love

That I Love/Over The Rainbow

This single was released in 1964 and the label shows "That I Love" as the A-side but "Over The Rainbow" went on to #1. I'm fairly sure that this did not appear on any album besides the 1965 complation ."That I Love " is a Tony Barber original and a right little foot stomper it is while "Over The Rainbow" is the Judy Garland classic which Billy made his own.

Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs - Great Hits

Rock Me Baby/Dream Baby/Poison Ivy/Smoke And Stack/Blue Day/Good Morning Little School Girl/You Don't Live Twice/Broken Things/Board And Boogie/You Don't Love Me

Strange Greatest Hits this one 3 singles from the first incarnation of the Aztecs A and B sides, a single fom 1967 then one single his first with the new heavy rock and boogie version of the Aztecs. The six early tracks also appear on the Linda Lee album that they shared with Johnny Noble. The album cover shows Billy during the heavier phase of his career while the majority of the songs predate it so they must have been trying to cash in on the new image. The interesting thing about the cover is that it shows Billy playing Bass Guitar.

Apr. 1964 "Blue Day" / "You Don't Love Me" (Linda Lee LL-006)
Jun. 1964 "Poison Ivy" / "Broken Things" (Linda Lee LL-007)
Nov. 1964 "Smoke & Stack" / "Board Boogie" (Linda Lee HK-765)
Sep. 1967 "Dream Baby" / "You Don't Live Twice" (Festival FK-2015)
Mar. 1970 "Good Morning Little School Girl" / "Rock Me Baby" (Festival FK-3638)

Warren Carr - (You Are My) Sunshine

(You Are My) Sunshine/Middle 8
Warren Carr was a pianist who played with John Konrad's Kaydets (1960) and in Johnny O'Keefe's backing band. Warren made many recordings for Leedon in his own name from 1961 to 1964, they are mostly in what has been described as "honky tonk party piano style" rather than anything resembling rock music.(You Are My) Sunshine/Middle 8 was released in 1961 and later that year he had an instrumental hit with "Li'l Old Me" both on the Leedon Label. He later went on to play Piano on the ABC'S childrens show Playschool.

JA-AR - Please Help Me I'm Falling

Please Help Me I'm Falling/Girl Girl Girl

John Rowles was born on 26th March 1947 in Whakatane and raised in Kawerau in the Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand. His parents were Eddie and Phyllis Rowles. Eddie played on the wing and three-quarter for the Maori All Black's in 1938, and was also a talented singer. John had five sisters, Georgina, Carol, Gabrielle, Cheryl and Tania, and two brothers, Edward and Wally. Edward unfortunately died when John was two, and out of respect for him, John adopted his name as his middle name throughout his career. Wally had a small singing career himself, originally going under the name Frankie Price, before changing to Frankie Rowles.
John's musical background is quite extensive with his first performance being at the age of 10, when he entered a local talent quest and sang "All Shook Up", taking out first prize. Whilst still at school he organised a group called the Shadows, named after the original group, and John played lead guitar. His father managed the group and they played at local dances at weekends. He was encouraged by his father and he even bought him his first electric guitar.
In 1962, when he was 15, John left school and got a job in a forestry camp. However, music was of prime importance in John's life and when he was sixteen he moved to Auckland where he acquired a job as a guitar player in a club. When the vocalist there became ill, John took over the vocal duties as well. While in Auckland he had a short spell with Sonny Day and the Sundowners, and it was while with them that he met Eddie Low.
John and Eddie moved to Australia in 1963 after signing a nine month contract to sing at the Riverside Inn in Melbourne. After that contract expired, John moved to Sydney and joined a group called the Dingdongers. John stayed with them for about a year and during his time with them, the group changed their name to the Sundowners.
By 1966, still in Australia, John had decided to go solo and secured the services of New Zealand promoter Graham Dent as his manager. Graham had previously been responsible for the successful career of Johnny Devlin and had also managed Max Merritt and the Meteors for a while. Graham gave John a new image, changed his hair style, new mod clothes and impressed upon him the importance of putting effort and action into his music and performances. Dent organised to have John appear on Australian television's "New Faces Of 1966". At this stage Dent had him performing under the name "The Secret", and he was so popular that there were huge numbers of offers for work. Dent kept him away from the promoters and press until after he had made an appearance on "Bandstand". He then launched John to the Australian music world as JA-AR and promoters were scrambling to sign him up.
John's first single as a soloist was released in 1966 on both the Sunshine and Komotion labels in Australia as JA-AR and was called "The End (Of The Rainbow)"/"You Still Love Him". This was followed early in 1967 with "Please Help Me I'm Falling"/"Girl Girl Girl" just on the Sunshine label. Owing to his television exposure, both singles did quite well. http://www.sergent.com.au/johnrowles.html

Peter Nelson and the Castaways - Skye Boat Song

Skye Boat Song/Goin' Out Of My Mind

Peter Nelson and the Castaways originated in Christchurch, where Peter Nelson had previously been in another Christchurch group called The Diamonds. The Diamonds consisted of Ray Messervy on bass, Don Clarkson on guitar, Doug Petrie on drums, David Henderson on guitar, with Kaye Bassett and Peter Nelson handling the vocals. They released one single in 1963 which was "Ventures In Paradise"/"Lucille", both sides were instrumentals. When The Diamonds split up, Peter Nelson and The Castaways with Kaye Bassett was formed, and the new line-up consisted of Peter Nelson and Kaye Bassett (Vocalists), Len Ormsby (Lead Guitar), Don Clarkson (Bass), Doug Henderson (Rhythm Guitar) and Doug Petrie (Drums). On moving to Wellington in 1965 (at which time Kaye Bassett left), they became known exclusively as Peter Nelson and The Castaways. Peter Gillette on the VOX continental organ (who had been playing in The Opposition at The Plainsman when the Castaways left Christchurch), was recruited into the band, and he then also moved to Wellington. Once established in Wellington, Peter Nelson and the Castaways played locally and appeared on the local TV show Teen Scene. They recorded two singles, "Down the Road A Piece"/"I'll Go Crazy" and "Baby Can I Take You Home"/"I'll Never Be Blue". By this time the band had substantiated the following line-up: Peter Nelson (Lead Vocalist), Len Ormsby (Lead Guitar), Don Clarkson (Bass), Doug Henderson (Rhythm Guitar), Doug Petrie (Drums), Peter Gillette (Keyboards). Peter Nelson and the Castaways made a strong reputation for themselves with their quirky choice of their own originals mixed with rhythm and blues. Their biggest hit was "Down In The Mine" written by Peter Hindmarsh.

Another single was released, "Skye Boat Song/Goin' Out Of My Head" and by this time the band had built up a large following in Sydney owing to their appearances in sydney Discos their single reached #23 mainly due to sales in Sydney alone success was hampered by the fact that Perth band Glen Ingram and the Hi five had also released a version and it was their single that did better nationally. Interestingly in New Zealand the singles A-side was Goin' Out Of My Head but was changed to the B-side in Australia when Sydney radio stations started to play Skye Boat Song due to the success of the Glen Ingram platter.

Ronnie Charles - Katy Jane WAVE

Katie Jane /No Face No Name And No Number

Ronnie Charles full name Ronnie Charles Boromeo was the lead singer of the Groop and on their breakup in 1969 released this single "Katie Jane" which he co-wrote, the B-side being the Traffic number "No Face No Name And No Number" both tracks are stunners. He released a second solo single "It's Been So Long/Natural Man" in 1970 which I'd like to get hold off. Ronnie then formed Captain Australia and The Honky Tonk the same year and released one single "Excerpts From Muses/Everybody I Love You" then they set off for the UK but like most Aussies that tried their luck in the UK they found the going tough and disbanded. The next band Ronnie formed was Atlas they released one album "Atlas" and released a couple of singles then broke up in '72. Still in England Ronnie recorded a solo album "Prestidigitation" in the late seventies Ronnie returned to Australia recorded another single "Rock n Roll Hoodlum/Aim For The Stars" and an album "Hands Off" released in 1983 and since then has fronted a number of bands and is currently fronting Ronnie Charles & The Retro Bandits.

Russell Morris - Slow Joey

Slow Joey
This is the B-side to Rachael released in 1970 and reached #23 on the charts probably no mean feat as this was the time of the dreaded radio bans when major record lables couldn't get their product played on the radio. I haven't posted the A-side as it was badly damaged but I've posted scans of both sides of the single .

Innocent Bystanders - Don't Go Looking Back

Just My Mother's Son/Lookin' Down At You/Let Me In/I Don't Care/Dangerous/Hard To Know/Those Days/Late Knight Criers/Don't Go Looking Back

At a time when cover bands dominated the Western Australian music landscape, "Bystanders" were one of the few original acts to make a dent and after a few years of hard work eventually pull very respectable crowds. Their Monday night residences at the Herdsman Hotel drew crowds of over 250 people, many of them music industry types there to listen to this powerful Australian band heavily influenced by Cold Chisel and Bruce Springsteen. The standout features were the depth of Keyser's songwriting and his powerful vocals and the amazing young teenage guitarist Mark Lizotte aka Diesel.
The band's songs drew heavily from their local environment of beaches, hot summers, weekends down South and even the demolition of the Scarborough Beach Hotel. In addition Keyser soaked up many influences and ventured into the realm of story-telling with his songs.
In 1983 the band released a cassette entitled Live at the Subi, recorded at the Subiaco Hotel with a mobile recording truck.
In 1984 the band flew to Sydney and recorded a single, "Lebanon" with Peter Walker (Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel producer)[1] with the lineup of Lizotte, Brett Keyser (vocals), John ‘Yak’ Sherrit (drums), John ‘Tatt’ Dalzell (bass) and Cliff Kinneen (keyboards).
Lizotte left the band in 1986. Keyser then recruited new players John Heussanstamm (guitar) and Al Kash (drums; ex-Blackfeather) and issued the album Don’t Go Looking Back on the Chase label. The other members followed Lizotte and formed the successful Australian act Johnny Diesel & The Injectors.

Smacka Fitzgibbon - Smacka's Party Album

Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven/Blueberry Hill/My Little Bimbo Down On The Bamboo Isle/At The Woodchopper's Ball (Inst.)/Home/Toot Toot Tootsie (Goo'bye)/My Blue Heaven/Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home/Alexander's Ragtime Band/I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight/Honey Hush/I'm A Ding Dong Daddy From Dumas/You Oughta Be In Pictures/March Of The Bobcats (Inst.)/If I Had You/The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise (Inst.)/After You've Gone/The Adventures Of Barry McKenzie

I wasn't going to post this here but what the heck someone might be interested. Smacka was best known for his hit "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" #21 0n the charts The album is made up of old standards jazz and rag time mainly and the backing musos are quite good check out the instrumentals there is also a different version of "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie on there as well.

Fitzgibbon was born at Mordialloc on 12 February 1930, the son of Francis (Frank) Fitzgibbon, clerk and Minnie née Mitchell (d 1989). Educated at St. Bede’s College, Mentone, ‘Smacka’ as he was popularly known began first playing the ukulele at an early age before switching to the banjo; his earliest influences were Bing Cosby and Louis Armstrong. In 1951 he began playing with “Frank Johnson’s Fabulous Dixielanders”, and later with the father of Australian jazz, Graham Bell, before forming his own band with “The Steamboat Stompers”; his first album was “Frisco Joe’s Good Time Boys”. In 1969 he opened Melbourne’s first jazz restaurant “La Brochette” (Studley Park Road, Kew) and later in June 1971 “Smacka’s Place” (Chetwynd Street, North Melbourne) which became a Melbourne institution; his recipe for an enjoyable night out was an ample supply of “good food, good liquor, and good entertainment”. Described as “plump and smiling with a warm and friendly genial personality”, Smacka was a much loved entertainer, a rare breed who left a smile on everyone’s face and a familiar face on Melbourne television shows, notably “Sunnyside Up”, “The Penthouse Club” and “In Melbourne Tonight”. In 1972, the jovial Australian jazzman recorded the title song of the unforgettable movie “The Adventures of Barry McKenzie” which became a best seller. Having had a malignant tumour removed in 1955, on 1 September 1977 Smacka collapsed during a radio broadcast on 3.L.O; in July 1979 he was told the end was neigh and died from a cerebral haemorrhage on 15 December aged 49 .
